If you think about Geneva, the things that come to mind are usually chocolate and luxury watches. But there is so much more to discover in Geneva! The city has a unique position, on the shores of a lake and surrounded by mountains. And offers excellent hotels, restaurants, and shops. Here are our tips to plan your visit to Geneva, where time is most enjoyed slowly and relaxing!
How to travel to Geneva?
The easiest way to travel to Geneva is via plane. Geneva International Airport is a relatively small one and it guarantees a quick service. Also, the duty-free area is extremely luxurious and you can find brands like Cartier or Hermes. So you may consider treating yourself with a luxury watch on the way back home. There are many low-cost companies operating in Geneva such as Easy Jet so you will easily find a cheap ticket to visit.
If you are coming from France or Italy by car, Geneva is very accessible too. As it is not an immense city, driving is fairly easy. However, Switzerland has a very severe road police and speeding can get you into a lot of trouble. For instance, the fine is calculated on the taxable income of the person caught speeding. A record fine of 1 million francs (0.9 million pounds) has been given to a speeding motorist a few years ago!
What to do in Geneva?
Geneva is located on the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman in French) and offers a great diversity of parks and beaches. The city center has a very distinctive medieval architecture, beautifully preserved. Home of the UN headquarters, Geneva plays an important political role worldwide. Unsurprisingly, people often think Geneva is a huge city, but it is actually quite small! There are only around 200,000 inhabitants in Geneva, while London accounts for 8 million! So you will be able to visit most of the places walking.
You can start by admiring the world-famous Jet d’Eau on Lake Geneva, either from the Pont du Mont-Blanc or the Jardin Anglais. There is a very relaxed atmosphere by the lake, and during summer you can feel beach vibes. From the Bains des Paquis, you can enjoy swimming in Lake Geneva. There is also great breakfast and lunch places on the shores of the lake. Geneva is a city where you will appreciate to relax and enjoy a slow time, with the proximity of nature all around you. Beautiful parks, Lake Geneva, and the Swiss Alps surrounding the city offer a unique combination!
The Geneva Motor Show takes place every year in February since 1965. Depending on the country where it takes place, a motor show has a different tone and addresses different audiences. For example, the Paris Motor Show is where car manufacturers introduce their best selling models. Usually, luxury brands like Bentley or Ferrari launch their new model in Geneva. It is the highlight of the year for Supercar lovers. The Geneva Motorshow takes place in Palexpo building, a short walk from Geneva airport. If you are planning to visit, plan your trip well ahead as it is arguably the busiest time of the year.
Where to stay in Geneva?
Geneva is known to be one of the wealthiest cities in the world. So it comes as no surprise that you can find some of the most luxurious hotels in the world here. The very classic Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues will welcome you with its incredible decoration, its lush spa, and amazing rooftop terrasse, in the heart of Geneva. The Reserve Geneve & Spa is a great alternative if you want to enjoy the garden terrasse and to be a few moments from the city center. These 2 hotels are expensive but offer an amazing quality/price ratio. For travelers on a budget, the excellent Geneva Hostel is affordable and ideally located in the old town, allowing you to do everything walking.
